Chitale Bandhu: How One Family Built a Food Empire
Chitale Bandhu is a well-known Indian brand specializing in traditional sweets, namkeens (savory snacks), and dairy products. Headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra, the company has grown from a modest family enterprise into a brand with a significant presence across India and in international markets.
Early Roots (1939)
The story begins in 1939 when Late Shri Babasaheb Chitale (also referred to as Bhaskar Ganesh Chitale) established a dairy business in the village of Bhilawadi in Sangli district, Maharashtra. Facing challenges in his earlier life, including the impact of the 1918 pandemic on his family circumstances, he moved to Bhilawadi, an area with abundant milk production. He began selling milk and dairy products such as curd and chakka, initially supplying them via the railway network to retailers in Mumbai.
Founding of Chitale Bandhu (1950)
In the mid-1940s, Babasaheb’s sons—Late Shri Bhausaheb Chitale (Raghunathrao) and Late Shri Rajabhau Chitale (Narsimharao)—shifted focus to Pune to expand the business. In August 1950, they opened the first Chitale Bandhu store in Pune’s Kunte Chowk (also associated with Bajirao Road / Sadashiv Peth). The shop initially focused on milk products like khoa (condensed milk) and soon expanded into traditional sweets. A second store followed in Deccan Gymkhana, Pune, which continues to operate.
The brand name “Bandhu” (meaning brothers) reflects the partnership between the two brothers.
Diversification and Signature Products
As demand grew, the company diversified beyond dairy. Sweets such as barfi, laddoo, and other traditional items were added to the portfolio. In 1976, Chitale Bandhu introduced its version of bakarwadi—a popular Gujarati snack adapted with Maharashtrian flavors.
By the 1990s, rising demand for bakarwadi led to a significant innovation. In 1996, Chitale Bandhu became the first company in India to produce bakarwadi (originally a Gujarati speciality) using automated machinery.
Expansion and Modern Growth
The second generation of leadership—including Shri Madhav Chitale, Shri Shrikrishna Chitale, and Shri Sanjay Chitale—strengthened retail and distribution networks across Pune and beyond. The company expanded its product range to over 250 items, covering sweets, savories, and snacks.
International expansion followed, with products reaching markets in the United States, Europe, the Gulf region, Southeast Asia, and Australia. A subsidiary, Chitale Bandhu Americas, supports the brand’s presence in the U.S. The company has also invested in technology, including digital systems and contactless delivery options during the pandemic period.
Recent Milestones
In 2024–2025, as the brand marked its 75th anniversary (counting from the 1950 founding of the mithai business), it appointed cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar as its brand ambassador.
Today, Chitale Bandhu operates numerous retail outlets (including franchise and company-owned stores) and continues to be recognized for products such as bakarwadi, shrikhand, chivda, and a wide variety of traditional sweets.
The brand’s journey—from a small dairy operation in rural Maharashtra to a multi-product enterprise with global reach—illustrates a steady focus on quality, family stewardship across generations, and gradual technological modernization.

Chitale Dairy started selling milk in plastic (polythene) pouches in the early 1970s.
The most frequently cited specific year across reliable sources is 1974. This is when the company introduced commercial-scale polythene milk pouch packaging using Prepac machines from France, becoming one of the first (and often described as the first) dairies in India to do so at scale.
